Coastal Bays Water Trails
Heading to the beach? Try something new and different. Paddle a coastal bay and explore barrier islands from the other side - via the inland coastal bays. These salt marsh and open saltwater habitats are teeming with waterfowl and wildlife. Wind your way through meandering channels that thread through emergent grasses. There are so many treasures to find. Go clamming or fishing along the way. Book a trip with a guide service for the best chance to discover the fish, invertebrates, gulls, ducks and more that live in these landscapes, and learn about the history of the area. Or enjoy a sunset paddle for a unique view of Maryland’s coast.
On Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore, you’ll find the E.A. Vaughn Wildlife Management Area, across from the popular Assateague Island National Seashore on the Chincoteague Bay. Explore the E. A. Vaughn Kayak and Canoe Trail with three paddling routes ranging from 3 to 6 miles. This gem on the Delmarva Peninsula provides an up-close look at coastal plant and animal habitats. The more adventurous can try the primitive camping area for overnight stays. Call 1-800-852-0335 or 410-213-2297 to get a water trail map.
The unique environs of Assateague Island National Seashore provide miles of paddling opportunities through the open waters, small coves, and salt marshes of the Sinepuxent and Chincoteague bays. Rent a kayak from Assateague Outfitters, or take a 2-hour guided tour to discover hidden treasures along the journey. Explore the salt marsh and its many channels, or paddle the open bay to discover an island. For the hardy adventurer, four backcountry campsites along the water trail can be used by permit. Water trail maps are available at the Assateague Island National Seashore Visitor Center.
