The Flying Boxcars
Meritus Park, home of Maryland’s newest minor league team, the Flying Boxcars, was part of a revitalization project in Hagerstown and is a hub for the community, hosting more than sixty Atlantic League Professional Baseball games every year. The stadium also serves as a venue for concerts, community events, and much more throughout the year. It opened in the spring of 2024.
The team’s unusual moniker is an homage to the nickname for the famous Fairchild C-82, a military cargo plane that was manufactured in Hagerstown in the 1940s and 50s. The planes had a central fuselage that was the exact size of a railroad car.
Hagerstown’s Deep Baseball Roots
While the Flying Boxcars represent a new chapter for baseball in Hagerstown, love of the game has deep roots here. For more than 90 years, Municipal Stadium served as the heart of the city's baseball scene. Built in 1930, it became home to the Hagerstown Suns, a minor league affiliate. Hack Wilson stepped to the plate at Municipal Stadium, Jim Palmer and Lefty Grove graced its mound, and the great Willie Mays played his first professional game there. Though demolished in 2022, the stadium holds a special place in Hagerstown's memory, hosting countless games and witnessing the passion of generations of baseball fans.
Meritus Park Amenities
Along with classic ballpark food, Meritus Park has several local vendors and Maryland classics including Gordon's Grocery crab cakes and dip, a hot chicken sandwich featuring Krumpe's Do-nuts, barbecue pizzas and beverages from a variety of local breweries and distilleries.
