In the 250 years since America’s founding, Maryland’s lush green mountains, sparkling shores, historic cities and charming small towns have been witness to the full arc of our nation’s history–right up to today. Maryland is proud to claim the title of the  Most Powerful Underground Railroad Storytelling Destination in the World  and invites visitors to explore its Trail System Second-to-None, including the outstanding collection of water trails. Travel across the state on Maryland’s 18 magnificent Historic and Scenic Byways and explore the majestic Chesapeake Bay, which runs through its heart. Maryland takes great pride in its unique Chesapeake Bay Storytellers Program, through which visitors can experience the Bay like a local.

Many of the place names in Maryland reflect the language of its first peoples, including the Nanticoke, Lumbee, Piscataway, Lenape, Susquehannock, Shawnee, Assateague, Accohannock, Chicone and Pocomoke. As we look back on 250 years as a nation, we honor these first founders and celebrate the contributions of the many Indigenous Marylanders who live and work in Maryland today.
