Born into slavery, Frederick Douglass escaped to became a leading abolitionist. A self-guided driving tour gives visitors an overview of Douglass’s early life at 14 sites. Numerous enslaved people escaped from Northampton plantation, owned by the Sprigg family from 1800 to 1836. Today, rebuilt foundations of two slave quarters and interpretive signs detail the lives of the enslaved African Americans and their free descendants who lived here from 1790 through 1940. Nationally-accredited museum that interprets the history of English colonization and the first landing on nearby St. Clement’s Island on March 25, 1634. The museum grounds are also home to a 19th-century one-room schoolhouse, pier and docking facility. Water taxi service to St. Clement’s Island State Park is available most days, March - October, weather permitting.
