The first monument to Washington in the United States. Begun in 1815, and 178’ 8” tall, the marble column forms the centerpiece of the four park squares of Mount Vernon Place, a National Historic Landmark District.

Climb the stairs and get a great view of the city. Some great history and it’s only 6 bucks plus you get a sticker :)

You have to get an appointment to walk up the 200 stairs. Be fit and come early. They do have a little stuff at the bottom to read, but to go to the top, you need to get an appointment.

Baltimore's Washington Monument was the first one, and as far as I'm concerned it's the best one. It may not be as tall as the nondescript icon to the south, but it is one of our beautiful landmarks...
