Enjoy a leisurely ride through the Appalachian Mountains with plenty of stops for scenic views, history and local eats. From waterfalls to works of art, a road -trip through the state’s mountain country offers breathtaking scenery and plenty of ways to discover something new.

Accident and McHenry

One such opportunity includes a stop in the town of Accident, on purpose... You’ll have to find how Accident got its name, but believe us, the story is worth the trip! Check out the Moon Shadow Café for a local pairing of Farm Fresh produce and goat cheese from Firefly Farms. Across the street at Firefly Farms & Creamery, meet the cheese makers and learn how their handmade goat cheeses have become world-renowned.  For a truly scent-sational experience, nearby Deep Creek Lavender Farm boasts over 1,500 lavender plants in 15+ varieties. Pick your own herbs, learn how to grow and use lavender for First Aid and cooking, shop for homemade gifts in the farm store or just soak in all the calming purple hues.

For unparalleled lake and alpine views, grab a bite to eat on the deck at Wisp Resort in McHenry. A must on everyone’s bucket list is their Mountain Coaster, where you regulate your own speed as you twist and turn among the woods of Wisp Mountain. Or for a more leisurely ride, enjoy a scenic chairlift to the top of Marsh Mountain overlooking Deep Creek Lake.

Mountain Lake Park

Looking to add some arts and culture into your road trip? Simon Pearce Glassblowing in Mountain Lake Park specializes in hand-blown glass and handmade pottery. Simon Pearce originated as a small glassblowing workshop in Kilkenny, Ireland before moving to the states in 1981. The glass is beautifully designed and produced with premium quality materials and time-honored techniques—intended for a lifetime of everyday use. Tour the facility and watch the glass blowers in action before selecting your own work of art.

Oakland

For a little slice of history, the town of Oakland is a state- and nationally-recognized Main Street Community. Meander through the unique shops and visit Garrett County Historical Museum, Oakland B&O Museum (a restored 1884 train station), and the Transportation Museum. See how transportation developed over the years and helped shape this county as the original Gateway to the West—don’t forget to refuel downtown at one of the local family-owned eateries.

Plus, fall foliage lovers rejoice, as Oakland’s Autumn Glory Festival is acclaimed worldwide for its dazzling five-day celebration in October.

Did you know that Garrett County is also home to Maryland’s tallest waterfall? Photos are a must when you visit Swallow Falls State Park, home to the namesake Swallow Falls as well as Maryland’s largest free-falling waterfall.  Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall – an awe-inspiring experience among the hemlock trees of the old growth forest. Safe travels home with tons of Maryland memories!

So hit the open road and explore Western Maryland on your next road trip. You’re sure to find good eats, outdoor adventures and plenty of photo-worthy pit stops!
