Site of July 9, 1864 Civil War battle dubbed "The Battle that Saved Washington." Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early defeated Union forces commanded by Gen. Lew Wallace who later wrote Ben Hur.

The battle that saves Washington happened at Monocacy. The visitor center museum is informative, the rangers are welcoming and very knowledgeable. The auto tour guide tells the story of the battle.

Unknown battle but well worth the trip. Staff were knowledgeable as helpful. We drove to well marked route on the provided map.
