Governor Moore Proclaims May 7-13, 2023 “Maryland Travel & Tourism Week”

Tourism Industry Unites to "Travel Forward"

BALTIMORE, MD (May 8, 2023)– Governor Wes Moore today proclaimed May 7-13, 2023 Maryland Travel & Tourism Week, in tandem with the U.S. Travel Association’s 40th Annual National Travel & Tourism Week (NTTW). Maryland Commerce Secretary Kevin Anderson presented the proclamation during an event with tourism industry leaders in Annapolis which included announcements of additional events for the weeklong celebration.

“Maryland is a world-class travel destination,” said Gov. Moore. “I am proud to highlight this national industry tradition celebrating the value that travel holds for our economy, our businesses, our communities, our personal well-being, and more and encourage Marylanders to get out and explore all that our great state has to offer.”

NTTW was created by Congress in 1983 to promote awareness of the economic power of travel in the United States. This year’s national theme of “Travel Forward” recognizes the industry as an essential economic driver for communities across the country, as a source of job creation, and as a vehicle for providing sustainable, inclusive, and globally competitive travel experiences.

The governor’s proclamation highlights the Chesapeake Bay as a unique Maryland destination that “offers year-round enjoyment to travelers, naturalists, sportsmen and water enthusiasts.” Travelers flock to the region for outdoor recreation, heritage tours, quintessential bay towns, unique scenic drives, wildlife programs, and culinary experiences.

Maryland is raising the bar for creating a better visitor experience via Chesapeake Bay Storytellers, an educational and tourism training program jointly presented by the Maryland Office of Tourism Development and National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network. The program works with existing Maryland businesses to infuse additional knowledge of Chesapeake Bay heritage, industries, history, ecology, and recreation.

During today’s event, Secretary Anderson presented Certificates of Recognition to the 2023 graduates of the program.

“We are proud to give this well-deserved recognition to the many rockstars in our tourism industry,” he said. “Graduates of the program serve as tourism ambassadors to the entire region and elevate the Bay as a premiere destination for travelers by sharing meaningful and compelling experiences.”
