Love to experience the quiet serenity of winter woodlands with a fresh blanket of snow? Eager to explore the outdoors in a novel way? If you’re an outdoor adventurer and trail lover, this invigorating activity is the perfect way to stay fit, active and primed to discover the natural wonders of winter. Mountain Maryland presents two state parks with groomed cross-country ski trails and rentals, ready for your snowy escapades.
NEW GERMANY STATE PARK
New Germany State Park is a mountain gem, nestled between the 2,900-foot Big Savage Mountain to the east and Meadow Mountain to the west. The park has been dubbed the “Maryland Alps” and you’ll soon see why. Ten miles of trails weave through hemlock forests, rhododendron glades, hills and lakeside scenery, serving up options for skiers of all skill levels, including a flat trail for beginners. Separate trails are recommended for hikers and snowshoers to keep cross-country ski trails in pristine shape for skiers.
Ski and snowshoe rentals are available at the Lake House on weekends (where you can warm up by the fire with a hot chocolate) and at the Ranger Station on weekdays. Park staff offer snowshoe lessons on select dates. Make sure to check the snow report before heading out. When conditions are right, park staff groom and track the trails for a first-class skiing experience.
Rent a full-service cabin for a cozy weekend getaway, but who says you need to hibernate? The trails beckon you to explore…
HERRINGTON MANOR STATE PARK
Picture-perfect winter scenery awaits you at Herrington Manor State Park, where the 53-acre Herrington Lake is the focal point. The Lakehouse windows frame the awe-inspiring view while you warm up by the fire. Get your gear, snacks and gifts there, then head out into the hills and wide-open spaces for a heart-pumping workout sure to keep you warm.
Ten miles of trails lead into the adjoining Garrett State Forest with ratings for beginners to intermediate skiers. A 5.5-mile trail connects Herrington Manor and Swallow Falls state parks, where you’ll find solitude and serenity. Park trails are groomed and track set when conditions allow.
When you’ve had your fill of the frosty weather, the enchanting Lakehouse calls you home to warm up while gazing at the frozen lake and the sledders frolicking down the hill. Make sure to rent a park cabin or nearby lodging so you can fully relax after the invigorating day’s adventures.
OTHER PLACES TO PLAY
Got your own equipment? Head out on a rail trail (or canal trail) for a fresh way to play during your snow day. The Torrey C. Brown Trail, C & O Canal Towpath, and the Western Maryland Rail Trail are fan favorites for skiers. Or try the Capital Crescent Trail near the nation’s capital.
