The map currently displays Maryland's Scenic Byways and Heritage Areas. These routes provide driving tour suggestions to get you off the highways and onto the byways for leisurely trips in the country where so much history, beauty and recreation is within reach. In many ways, a byway is the destination not just the journey.

When sites are selected on Maryland’s interactive tour map, the map displays shaded areas, colored lines and icons. Icons represent individual sites in various travel categories. Colored lines represent scenic byways, trails and driving tours. Shaded areas show the boundaries of parks and other places of special interest. Below is a key to these symbols and colors.

How should I use this map?

How can I start over with a clean map?
A RESET button is located in the left corner of the map’s top navigation panel. By clicking RESET, the map will reload without any sites displayed.
How do I find certain types of attractions using this map?
Select from the categories on the left to customize the map to your interests. Click a category to highlight it. The category button will then appear shadowed.

How can I find information about a site shown on the map?

There are so many sites on my map, how do I turn some of them off?
Sites within one sub-category are turned on and off by clicking on the sub-category buttons. In the left navigational panel, there are several category buttons displayed. When a category has sites displayed on the map, the button will appear shadowed or darker. Click the category button to see a drop-down menu with the sub-categories. If a sub-category is selected, the bar will be shaded in color and a check box will be filled. Click on the sub-category bar to de-select it. Once de-selected, the subcategory bar will no longer be colored, and its sites will disappear from the map.
There are so many sites that overlap, how can I reach the ones that are underneath?
When the map shows the entire state, several sites may appear to overlay each other. By zooming to a local scale, the sites are offset enough to see and read them all when scrolling over them. Use the zoom feature in the top right corner of the map to adjust the scale of the map. Sometimes one site is listed in multiple categories. If each of these categories is selected, two or more icons representing the same site will directly overlap. The information provided for a single site in each category is the same.
How do I find a specific site?
A search by name function is found in the right corner of the map’s top navigational panel. In the search box, type the site name, or part of its name. If a site with that name is in the map’s database, it will display in the search results box. If multiple sites with that name are in the database, all will be displayed. Select the site of interest, and click-through. A large icon will display on the map to indicate the location of the selected site. Hover on the icon and click-through to display site information in the box at the bottom of the web page.
How can I find a specific address?
A “find an address” feature is not available at this time, but will be added in the future.
How can I find places to stay and eat?
Places to lodge and dine are not currently included in the interactive map’s database, but will be in the future. While these sites cannot be displayed on the map, lodging options can be found on the website. Click on “A Place to Stay” on the web page’s top navigational panel to see a list of lodging options. Select from hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts, boat and breakfasts, conference centers, campgrounds and more. Or select a region to see all lodging options within an area of the state
Can I save my custom map?
A map save feature is not currently available, but will be developed in the future.
How do I print this map?
The interactive map web page can be printed by selecting the button with the printer icon, which is located on the left side of the map’s top navigational panel. Information about an individual site and a map showing the location of that site can also be printed by selecting the “Print Site” button. This button is found within the site information box at the bottom of the page.
How can I send myself or someone else information I find on this map?
Information about an individual site can be e-mailed by selecting the “Share” button within the site information box at the bottom of the page. The site’s description, contact and location will be automatically copied into the e-mail message. The message will also include a link to the interactive map web page.
What do the regions mean?
When the “REGION” button in the top navigational panel is selected, the map will display color-coding to show the extent of various travel regions within Maryland. The colors on the map correlate to colors in a drop-down menu where the region names are found. Each region has unique landscapes, natural features, cultures and, of course, exciting places to visit and activities to do.
By selecting a region in the drop-down menu, the map will zoom to that part of the state and the site information box will provide a description and photo of the region. Here you can learn about what makes each region unique. From sparkling beaches on the Atlantic Ocean to vibrant cities and cultural centers to the majestic Appalachian mountains, Maryland’s regions are diverse and interesting places to visit.
Can I get driving directions to a site?
Driving directions to an individual site can be obtained by selecting the “Driving Directions” button in the site information box at the bottom of the web page. By clicking this button, a Google maps page will display with the location of the site plotted. Within the Google maps page, select “Directions” to add a starting or ending point.
