When you really want to treat your dog to something special, or hang out with other dog owners who love their pooch as much as you do, there’s no better place to take Fido than to a furry, family-fun outdoor event. Here’s a list of some favorite competitions, parades, and festivals that your dog will just drool over. Best of all, every one of these events benefit local animal shelters.
1 Boardwalkin' for Pets
Worcester County Humane Society annual fun event in April - the walk-a-thon on the boards! All proceeds benefit the Ocean City area's no-kill pet shelter. Bring your pet for a fun time on the boards to help the animals or "adopt" a shelter dog for the day by arrangement prior to the walk-a-thon. Registration fee.
2 Black Tie and Tails
Bring your pup to the most unique gala event of the year, held in late April. The evening is hosted by WMAR-TV ABC2 News Anchor, Jamie Costello, and features an elegant seated dinner, tastings, live and silent auctions, and pet fashion show. Benefits the Baltimore Humane Society in Reisterstown.
3 March for the Animals
Join the Maryland SPCA for a walk-a-thon at Camden Yards Sports Complex outside of M&T Bank Stadium and Orioles Park in April. Costumes are encouraged for pets and owners alike.
4 Puppy Plunge
The SPCA of Anne Arundel County hosts its annual Walk and Run for the Animals at Quiet Waters Park's measured courses during April. Enjoy the walk and outdoor festival.
In August, the Puppy Plunge takes place at scenic Camp Letts in Edgewater in August. Owners and their four-legged friends are encouraged to participate in fun activities, including the “plunge” into the Rhode River, dog bikini contest, and puppy pie-eating contest.
5 Wine & Wag Happy Hours
Monthly on Friday evenings - May - September 2017
Happy Hour is even happier with man’s best friend. Head to Baltimore and join the Maryland SPCA Wine & Wag Happy Hours for off-leash play, bobbing for hot dogs, paw painting, beer and wine (humans only) and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Check back often for additional dates.
6 Paws and Claws 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk - Baker Park
Join the Annual Paws & Claws 5K Run / 1 Mile Walk at Baker Park in June. Bring family and friends and help the animals. Route goes through beautiful, historic Frederick. Benefits the Animal Welfare League of Frederick County.
7 DogFest Featuring Paws on Parade Walkathon
Join the Baltimore Humane Society in Reisterstown for DogFest in September for a one-mile trail walk with your furry family member at the organization’s beautiful 365-acre wildlife sanctuary. Then, participate in dog-friendly contests and games. Enjoy demonstrations and a shelter dog showcase.
8 Bark in the Park - Talbot County
This October event in Easton features a dog show, 5K fun run, PAWrade of adoptable pets, dog trick tent, food, music, crafts, and other vendors to benefit Talbot Humane.
9 Barcstoberfest - Patterson Park - Baltimore
The area's largest pet-friendly festival, Barcstoberfest attracts over 3,000 people and their pets to enjoy the Ready, Set…Sniff! 5K and one-mile walk-a-thon, great food, a beer garden, entertainment and animal activities, including the annual Howl-o-ween Costume Contest.
10 Dog Days of Summer Cruise
Get your paws wet and hop aboard Watermark's Harbor Queen for a special "dog friendly cruise" benefitting the Anne Arundel County SPCA. Friendly on leash dogs welcome.And dogs cruise free! Enjoy a buffet donated by Graul's Market, plus music, silent auction, cash bar and even refreshments for Fido. The top deck of Harbor Queen will feature doggie pools so "hot dogs" can cool off!
