Maryland Heritage Areas

 

Heritage areas are regions of the landscape that are woven together by a common history, unique culture and special geographic traits.  They provide an area's special look and feel.  In Maryland, tidewater areas dotted with fishing villages on the Chesapeake Bay and former rolling tobacco farms are one example.  Another Maryland heritage area may include rugged mountains, lush with greenery, intersected by winding railroads and old turnpikes that transport lumber and coal.  Heritage areas are recognized and certified by the State once their unique characteristics are documented and a plan identified to manage them and keep them authentic.  When you travel and stay in one of Maryland's 12 heritage areas, you can expect to sample foods, arts and crafts, recreation, scenery and the stories that authentically reflect the culture of the region.  Enjoy them all!
