The first monument to Washington in the United States. Begun in 1815, and 178’ 8” tall, the marble column forms the centerpiece of the four park squares of Mount Vernon Place, a National Historic Landmark District.

Walked their on Thanksgiving and no wonder the stairs(?) up the monument we’re not open. Still the church and gardens around provided a nice place to view and walk around.

We stumbled upon this monument and enjoyed reading about the history inside. To enter does not cost anything, but to climb the stairs was I believe $6/person. It takes about 15 minutes to climb up...
