Immerse yourself in autumn splendor.
Hiking and biking trails are a great way to experience the fall season in Maryland. Follow local trail maps for an up-close look at the state’s natural beauty and regional attractions – from Mountain Maryland to the Eastern Shore, from Southern Maryland to the top of the Chesapeake Bay. Come to wine trails, Civil War trails and trails that twist through natural habitats. Enjoy state forests and parks. Travel along scenic byways. In Maryland, it’s all Pretty. Close.

Arts & Entertainment – 'Autumn Glory' in mountains
Hike or bike your way around Garrett County in Western Maryland during the Autumn Glory Festival, Oct. 7-11. Started 42 years ago, this countywide event is a perfect blend of magnificent scenery, Western Maryland culture and the splendor of fall. Two large parades, concerts, arts exhibits, antiques shows, car show, even an Oktoberfest tossed in. Stop by a glorious farmers’ market and crafts show. Enter the “Great Pumpkin Race.” Also, see the official Maryland State Banjo, and Fiddle and Mandolin championships.
Back to Nature – Heed the call of the wild
Take a walk on the wild side. Bird walks, wildlife exhibits, eagle prowls and refuge tours at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge Open House, Oct. 3, near Cambridge. Blackwater is "the Everglades of the North." Experience the world of wildlife decoy carving at Ward Museum of Wildlife Art's Chesapeake Wildlife Expo, Oct. 9-10, in Salisbury. Then, Oct. 24, head to the Patuxent Wildlife Festival. Animals, interactive exhibits and natural habitats at one of the largest science and environmental venues, the National Wildlife Visitor Center in Laurel.
In training – Discover rail tradition
A hike or bike ride along rail tracks can evoke thoughts of the "golden age of rail travel." In fact, if you're on the C&O Canal Towpath at Lock 30, you’re minutes from the Brunswick Railroad Museum. On Oct. 3-4, the museum celebrates Brunswick Railroad Days, a salute to the railway heritage of this former B&O Railroad hub town. A week later, Oct. 10-11, visit the Great Scale Model Train Show at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium – the largest exposition of scale-model trains in the nation.
Oktoberfest Season – Get out your lederhosen
You’ll want to walk around after visiting one of these Oktoberfests. It’s traditional to have plenty of food on hand: schweinsbraten, steckerlfisch, wurstel, reiberdatschi, kasepatzle and more. Start your Oktoberfest tour at Frederick’s Oktoberfest, Oct. 3-4, at the Frederick County Fairgrounds. The following weekend, you’ll have your pick: Ocean City Oktoberfest, Oct. 9-11 at the Ocean City Convention Center; Maryland Brewer's Oktoberfest, Oct. 10, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium; and Oktoberfest at the Kentlands, Oct. 11, at Kentlands Village Green in Gaithersburg. Trappe-toberfest, Oct. 17, celebrates autumn and includes three Tour de Trappe cycling events.
Seafood festivals – Enjoy the Bay’s bounty
Bike at the water’s edge on Tilghman Island, "pearl of the Chesapeake Bay" on the Eastern Shore. Tilghman Island Day Festival, Oct. 17, is a day of crab-picking, oyster-shucking, boat races, docking contests, live music and Maryland seafood. Flea market, treasure hunt at Tilghman Watermen’s Museum. Back across the Bay, visit the 43rd annual Maryland Oyster Festival, Oct. 17-18 at St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds. Two major competitions: National Oyster Shucking Championship and National Oyster Cook-Off. Plenty of local seafood – oysters are king.
Wine Festivals – Raise a toast outdoors
Walk on the beach, tour historic properties, stroll through parks. Winefest on the Beach, Oct. 2-3 at Ocean City’s Inlet Park, features live music, Eastern Shore cuisine, arts & crafts, and of course, Maryland wine. Riverside WineFest at Sotterley, Oct. 3-4 at Sotterley Plantation in St. Mary’s County, spotlights 17 Maryland wineries at a National Historical Landmark on the banks of the Patuxent. Southern Maryland food, entertainment, kids’ activities and antiques show. Autumn Wine Festival, Oct. 17-18, presents 23 Maryland wineries, live music and food at Pemberton Park in Salisbury. Tour historic Pemberton Hall, hike park trails.
