Maryland’s rich equestrian history is in the spotlight in the spring. The Preakness Stakes -- the center jewel of Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown -- takes place May 17 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Steeplechase events reflect another aspect of Maryland’s equestrian tradition, with the Howard County Cup Races, May 3, and Potomac Hunt Races, May 18. Fair Hill Races, May 24, have attracted horsemen and families to Elkton since 1934. Eventing, an equestrian sport derived from cavalry contests of times past, comes to Cockeysville May 3-4 with the MCTA Horse Trials at Shawan Downs . Celebrate all horses, big and small, at Horse Appreciation Day in Pasadena, May 10.
