Plein Air Painter Arts & Entertainment– Engage in outdoor art
Stroll through one of Nature’s great outdoor art studios – Deep Creek Lake State Park in Mountain Maryland. Art in the Park at the Discovery Center, July 11-12, features artists, Dixieland band and silent auction. Go from bucolic vistas to urban energy at nation’s largest free public-arts festival, 28th annual Artscape in Baltimore, July 17-19 – visual and performing artists, live entertainment on three stages. Then visit the Eastern Shore for East Coast’s premier Plein Air Competition & Arts Festival, July 20-26 in Easton. Watch top-notch artists paint “in the open air” in “the Hamptons of the Chesapeake.”

Blend savory Maryland crabs, live music and good company. Add local seasoning. End up with a Maryland tradition: summertime seafood celebrations. Try Taste of Cambridge, July 11, in the Arts and Entertainment section of a revived waterfront town on the Eastern Shore. Also on July 11, enjoy cool jazz with Maryland seafood at the Potomac Jazz and Seafood Festival – where English settlers arrived 375 years ago and established a new colony. On July 15, head to the 33rd annual J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake (named for the former governor) in Crisfield, a waterfront town built on oyster shells. Also, plan a culinary adventure during Howard County Restaurant Week, July 27-Aug. 9.
Ice Cream Sudaes Cool Pleasures – We all scream for ice cream
Baltimore milk-dealer Jacob Fussell, “father of the ice-cream industry,” started something that numerous creameries and shops around the state have continued. Visit Union Mills Homestead in Carroll County for an Ice Cream Sundae Social, July 12. (Sundaes were invented in the late 1890s, says the International Dairy Foods Association.) Also on July 12, Ocean City begins its Sunday-evening family concerts – Sundaes in the Park – where you can create your own ice-cream sundae.
Jellies Invasion Family Fun – Dinosaurs, jellies, sharks and pirates
Witness a prehistoric invasion on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. More than 20 dinosaurs from China – some 70-feet long – are descending on the Maryland Science Center for Chinasaurs: Dinosaur Dynasty. Did you know jellyfish are everywhere? They’ve been around forever. National Aquarium is site of Jellies Invasion: Oceans Out of Balance. Book a Waterfront Invasion package. See fossilized evidence of another enduring species at Calvert Marine Museum’s Sharkfest! in Southern Maryland, July 11. And, get to the Susquehanna Museum at the Lock House in Havre de Grace to see a pirate invasion, July 11-12.
Pow Wow Performer History & Heritage – Powwows, Civil War
Experience native-American culture at two tribal gatherings – Howard County Powwow, July 11-12, Howard County Fairgrounds, and Baltimore Powwow, Timonium State Fairgrounds in Baltimore County, July 17-19. Events feature authentic American-Indian dancing, music, storytelling and crafts. Also, get up-close looks at the Civil War. Visit two living-history encampments in a region steeped in Civil War history – Rose Hill Manor Park, July 11-12, and Union Mills Homestead, July 18-19.

Charter Fishing Outdoor Sports – Hop aboard a charter boat
Go with the local experts. Arrange a fishing expedition with a Maryland charter-boat captain. Hop aboard a sailboat, powerboat, catamaran, schooner or skipjack for an adventure along Maryland’s waterways. Snag bluefin tuna, marlin or mahi-mahi during a deep-sea fishing trip off the coast of Ocean City. Reel in flounder, spot, croaker, trout and striped bass (Maryland’s state fish – also known as rockfish) in the Chesapeake Bay. For fishing conditions and regional reports, check the Fisheries Service at the Department of Natural Resources.

Tractor Pull Hidden Gems – Traditional arts, tractors
Master musicians, artists and craftspeople – representing traditional arts around the world – will be at the Roots Music and Arts Festival, July 11-12, at the Carroll County Farm Museum. Event sponsored by Common Ground on the Hill, a McDaniel College group that explores global culture through music and art. Discover another farm area, just north of Easton on the Eastern Shore. Tuckahoe Steam & Gas Association – preserving a rural way of life from yesteryear – hosts Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Show, July 9-12 and a Tuckahoe Tractor Pull, July 17. Antique engines, tractors and farm machinery on display.
