Discover a National Park adventure: Maryland has 20 national parks, historic sites and trails – reflecting the state's rich heritage, diverse cultural landscape and magnificent natural splendor. Explore Assateague Island where wild horses roam the beach. Go biking along the C&O Canal. At the 55-mile marker, the free Brunswick Bicycle Festival is Aug. 20. Also on the canal: Williamsport Days, Aug. 27-28. Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine offers evening bird-walks, Aug. 24, 31.
Lady with tray of carbs Seafood celebrations
Start with 478 bushels of crabs at the Annapolis Rotary Crab Feast, Aug. 5 at Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium. Next, visit the Havre de Grace Seafood Festival (free admission), Aug. 12-14 in Tydings Memorial Park. On the Eastern Shore, the 32nd annual Seafood Feast-I-Val is Aug. 13 at Sailwinds Park in Cambridge. Chesapeake Crab and Beer Festival – divided into two sessions – offers 40,000 crabs and more than 50 beers and wines on the waterfront at National Harbor, Aug. 20.
White Marlin Jumping Maritime traditions
Visit the waterfront at St. Mary's College of Maryland for 38th annual Governor's Cup Yacht Race, Aug. 5-6 – live music, food on Saturday, Aug. 6. Stop by Harbour Island in Ocean City for daily weigh-ins at the 38th annual White Marlin Open, Aug. 8-12. About 300 boats compete for a few million in prize money. Edgar Hansen, of the Deadliest Catch (Discovery Channel), is special guest at Watermen's Appreciation Day & Crab Feast, Aug. 14 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels.
Musical Entertainers Festivals with music
Goddard Family Farm in Southern Maryland presents the 23rd annual Lil Margaret's Bluegrass and Old Time Country Music Festival, Aug. 11-13 – three days of family fun, home cooking and country concerts. Rockville's Uncorked Wine and Music Festival, Aug. 27 at the city's town square, features tastings with Maryland wineries, cooking demonstrations and live entertainment on two stages.
Civil War Re-enactors Civil War territory
Watch sharpshooter and infantry re-enactors in a demonstration of Civil War military advances at Antietam National Battlefield's Technology of War Weekend, Aug. 6-7 in Western Maryland. Take a trip down Antietam Creek at the Antietam Kayak & Brunch, Aug. 21. Brunch served at Park Pavilion in Sharpsburg. Also, trace troop movements during the early part of the Battle of South Mountain at Hiking through History: Battle of Fox's Gap, Aug. 26 at Washington Monument State Park in Middletown.
