Now, it’s really spring. April is the time to revive your spirit. Attend an outdoor festival. Plan a getaway to a waterside town on the Eastern Shore. Stay at a B&B. Stroll through a public garden. Take a hike in ‘Mountain Maryland.’ Go to a baseball game. Enjoy food, wine and music in lush surroundings. Follow trails that lead into Civil War history. This is a month to rejuvenate. Maryland is the place to do it. And, it’s all Pretty. Close.

Wood decoy carving Arts & Entertainment – Decoy art at the beach
Wildfowl art is in the limelight, April 24-26 at the Ocean City Convention Center. Annual Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition and Art Festival features decorative works of art and functional hunting decoys – carved by 800 of the world’s best. More than 120 exhibitors offer fine art items, folk art, jewelry, sporting goods and carving supplies. Kids activities, seminars and auction.
Wine sampling Culinary Corner – Epicurean delights by the Bay
Enjoy gourmet food and award-winning wines at the seventh annual St. Michaels Food & Wine Festival, April 24-26 on the grounds of the Chesapeake Maritime Museum. Celebrity chefs, guest speakers, demonstrations, tastings and auction. Local restaurants offer signature dining events during weekend. St. Michaels – in Talbot County – is a popular waterfront destination for romantic getaways.
Farm museum life demonstration Family Fun – Life on the farm 100 years ago
Bring the kids to Rose Hill Manor Park in Frederick County for the Farm Museum Family Festival, April 25-26. Hayrides, kids’ tractor pulls, music and crafts. Exhibits at the museum – carpentry shop, broom shop, family kitchen and others – depict the region’s agricultural heritage. Rose Hill Manor is in the National Register of Historic Places.
Flower at Adkins Arboretum Great Outdoors – In a garden, down a mountain
Get a running start into spring. Adkins Arboretum – a 400-acre public garden in Caroline County that is dedicated to regional native plants – hosts its Arbor Day Run and Family Fun Run, April 18. Same day on the other side of Maryland, Adventure Sports Center International in Garrett County stages Teva Tax Day 5K.The Center – atop Marsh Mountain, minutes from Deep Creek Lake – opens that weekend.
Shad in water Hidden Gems – Two festivals, two Shore towns
Celebrate the return of the American shad to the Nanticoke River at the 14th annual Nanticoke River Shad Festival, April 25 on the waterfront in Vienna. Drive to Chestertown the next day for the second annual Taste of Chestertown, April 26. Chocolate macaroons, hot dogs, turkey mole, crab bisque and scallop tacos are some of the items that Chestertown’s restaurants offer in this competition.

Civil War Reenactors History & Heritage – Civil War days in Maryland
Immerse yourself in sights and sounds of the Civil War at Fort McHenry’s Battle Cry of Freedom weekend, April 18-19. Dress parade, Union encampment, artillery demonstrations, fife and drum music, and Saturday-night candlelight tour. Also, learn about the war’s impact on the state at Maryland and the Civil War, A Regional Perspective at Carroll Community College in Westminster, April 4. Conference topics include: John Brown’s raid; Lincoln’s view of Maryland.
Steeplechase Race Spectator Sport – Steeplechase in ‘horse country’
Pack your blanket and picnic basket and head to northern Baltimore County for the 99th running of My Lady’s Manor Steeplechase Races, April 11. Course is near Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton. Watch the elegance of jockeys guiding their horses over timber fences along the verdant countryside. It’s a Maryland tradition and a rite of spring.
