Established by President Obama on March 25, 2013, the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument honors one of the nation’s greatest heroines. There is not a statue at this monument; instead, visitors can explore preserved landscapes that were once very important to Tubman as an enslaved child, young woman, freedom seeker, and successful Underground Railroad “conductor” in Dorchester County. The best way to explore the monument is via a driving tour of these sites on the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.
