Workforce Training for Careers in Hospitality and Tourism
Attracting and retaining a hospitality and tourism workforce which provides exceptional service to visitors is a constant challenge. Hospitality and tourism comprise the 4th largest segment of Maryland’s economy. About 230,000 people are employed in the industry, comprising about one in ten private sector jobs in the state. These jobs are in restaurant and food service, lodging, attractions --including parks, recreation, museums and amusements-- and travel services.
In 2005 the state welcomed more than 27 million visitors, who contributed nearly $10.7 billion to our economy. In most jurisdictions, hospitality and tourism are the leading employers. More than 1,000,000 openings (job growth combined with replacement demand) are expected to be added to Maryland’s economy through 2012. These trends are outlined in detail in the 2007 report of the Governor’s Hospitality and Tourism Workforce Summit.
